Business communications can be classified into three categories:
- Inter-office calls
- Domestic calls
- International calls
Enterprises with multiple locations need to constantly be in touch with offices and customers across cities, provinces, states, countries, and continents. Almost every organization today has access to the Internet for data communications and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
This technology offers the most cost effective way to optimize available resources by using the same connection for voice, fax, and data transmission to communicate over existing LANs (local area networks) or WANs (wide area networks).

Voice and fax communications normally use the Public Switching Telephone Network (PSTN) through dedicated circuits called trunks or T1 lines.
Each T1 trunk contains 24 time slots, each providing 64 Kilobytes of Bandwidth. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the other hand routes voice calls over the Internet or other IP-based data networks. It allows a user to call another user over the Internet for a fraction of the cost a normal telephone call.
This is made possible by packetization, and compression of voice data.
