What is a Virtual Machine?

A Virtual Machine is an isolated software which behaves exactly like a physical computer. It can run its own operating system and applications, and includes the same computer components such as motherboard, VGA card, network card controller, etc. As a result, Virtual Machines are completely compatible with all standard x86 operating systems, applications and device drivers, and as such, they can be used to run all the same software that you would run on a physical x86 computer.

There is in fact no difference between a Virtual Machine and a physical one, as far as the operating systems, applications or other computers on the network are concerned. The Virtual Machine is perceived the same way as the physical machine even though it is composed entirely of software, contains no hardware in any way and has its own virtual (software-based) CPU, RAM hard disk and Network Interface Card (NIC).

Why switch?

Maintaining a server at a datacenter is most of the times a good investment to ensure your servers are functioning at their best. However, maintaining a server also requires a lot of time and resources, and operations are usually very costly. Here are some examples of things you will need to consider when purchasing a physical machine:

Renting space

The hardware

The rack space

The amount of time spent to configure all the equipments

Ensuring enough Internet bandwidth and redundancy

A Virtual Machine can do all that for you and much more, at only a small part of the resources and costs involved. Let Iristel deal with the hassle; all you have to do is decide what to host on the servers. You can run almost any type of software, like PBXs, databases, IVRs, conference bridges, etc.

Today’s x86 computer hardware was designed to run a single operating system and a single application, leaving most machines underutilized. Virtualization enables running several Virtual Machines on a single hardware, with each Virtual Machine sharing the same resources across multiple environments. Each Virtual Machine can run a different operating system and multiple applications on the same physical computer.

Iristel creates fully functional Virtual Machines running their own operating system and applications by using specialized software. Virtualization is done by inserting a thin layer of software directly on the computer hardware or on a host operating system. This contains a Virtual Machine monitor or “hypervisor” that allocates hardware resources dynamically and transparently, allowing the multiple operating systems to run concurrently on a single physical computer and share hardware resources with each other.

Here are some more advantages of a Virtual Machine over a physical machine:

Isolation

Each Virtual Machine on a server is isolated, thus if you run several Virtual Machines and one of them needs rebooting or crashes, the others will continue to function normally, unlike non-virtualized environments where all applications on the server will be affected. Having a Virtual Machine means creating backups and performing virtual environment migrations with no downtime, and a faster recovery in case of unplanned issues. With an isolated environment, a Virtual Machine ensures a higher degree of availability and security of applications.

No collocation facility needed

Increase your IT administrators’ efficiency and availability by eliminating the old “one server, one application”. Iristel will spend the time managing the servers, giving your staff centralized control, while users are allowed an easy access to the services they need. Deploy, manage and monitor secure desktop environments that users can access locally or remotely, on almost any standard desktop, laptop or tablet PC.

Encapsulation

Avoid application conflicts by running each application on a Virtual Machine, instead of all on one server.

Encapsulating an entire machine allows you to safely run several operating systems and applications at the same time on a single server, with each having access to the needed resources at any time. The hardware resources can be used whenever and wherever needed, thanks to their dynamic allocation. Peak times require excess hardware and useless expenses; you can now eliminate them as you rest assured that the necessary resources are permanently available to your highest priority applications.

Flexibility

The configuration of a Virtual Machine is very versatile. Each Virtual Machine can have its own separate configuration, with different IP allocation, with the operating system of your choice, with the chosen number of IP addresses, and different amount of resources – processing power, disk space, and virtual memory.

Efficiency

Iristel will configure and have your Virtual Machine ready to use in just a couple of minutes. Any type of change can be done instantly, as hardware independence gives the freedom to move a Virtual Machine from one type of x86 computer to another without making any changes to the device drivers, operating system, or applications.

For further details regarding configuration options and personalized quotes, please contact our Sales team.

Iristel’s SMS messaging platform provides routing, interoperability, translations, and management across technologies for seamless messaging between wireless operators and IP-based service providers.

The most critical factor in the success of SMS services is immediate delivery of a message, which leads to revenue guarantee. IP-based service providers must be confident that messages are delivered to end-users. In fact, a service provider’s success – and the success of the customers they serve – depends on the ability to manage a range of issues such as interoperability, network and routing, and complex business relationships that exist in the messaging industry.

Our SMS solution is intended to be used for peer-to-peer messaging (that is, between two subscribers, each having their own permanently assigned phone number), and is not a replacement for short-code aggregation type services.

Iristel is the first VOIP operator with coast to coast coverage offering SMS enabled Canadian DIDs, offering the most complete approach to meeting the technological challenges associated with this service. The SMS interconnections are done using SMPP protocol and all SMPP connections are done through VPNs. The SMS interconnection includes unlimited inbound SMS-es (from mobile networks to customer) and Outbound SMS-es are offered at wholesale pricing plans, based on monthly volumes. Direct connection to Iristel includes redundant SMPP binds.

The advantages of using Iristel’s SMS solution include:

Real Time Message Delivery, which provides real-time processing of messages versus batch message delivery

Delivery Confirmation

Fast configuration process and updates

Redundancy through 2 dedicated servers

Secured transmission through VPN

Highly competitive interconnection costs

The possibility to select Inbound Only SMS, Outbound Only SMS, or both

Iristel’s mission has always been to provide international access to native turnkey Canadian CLEC services, enabling clients, ranging from simple PBX operators to carriers, with local presence without the regulatory hassle.

Being a fully fledged coast to coast Canadian CLEC, Iristel’s network interconnects with the ILEC infrastructure directly, bridging the gap between TDM and VoIP.

Traditionally, 411 services with a Canadian flavour required a TDM interconnection, which demanded high fixed costs and had a lack of flexibility due to the nature of TDM links. Thus, many VoIP service providers utilize the services of US based 411 providers, which fit a rough need but do not provide the same user experience or coverage as a native Canadian 411 service will feel to a Canadian end user.

Through this step, Iristel provides a cost effective and technically viable option for VoIP service operators to provide Canadian flavoured 411 services.

Iristel’s 411 service provides operator assistance, with initial automated speech recognition in both the English and French languages and with the local Canadian content (e.g. asking for a province and not a state by default)

The phone number coverage is based on the centralized 411 database system that Canadian ILECs and CLECs maintain under the existing Canadian regulations. In this sense the queries are being made with greater and more up to date coverage than what US based 411 services are providing for Canadian numbers. Iristel’s 411 directory assistance service will also be able to cover U.S. listings.

The pricing model is imputed in Iristel’s wholesale program, being a fixed rate per call.
Call routing is transparent, behaving at SIP level like the regular call termination services provided by Iristel.

Users Get a Dedicated Phone Number for Free, Unlimited Texting Within Canada and the US

Los Angeles, Calif. (August 9, 2011) – GOGII, makers of textPlus, today announced users in Canada can have their very own free phone number to support fast, free and unlimited texting with anyone — whether they are using textPlus or not. textPlus is the worldwide leader in mobile social messaging, available on Android and iOS devices and reaching over 50 million users in 193 countries/territories. To date, there have been 60 million messages sent per day and almost 14 billion overall messages sent in the textPlus network.

Now, textPlus users with an iPhone, iPad and/or iPod touch device can text their friends within Canada and over the border in the US at no cost. iPhone users can use their textPlus phone number as a free, dedicated texting line. Users on iPod touch and iPad connected devices just need a WiFi connection to use textPlus to reach any other SMS-enabled phone.

In addition to free texting, users can also participate in textPlus communities — public and private chatrooms where users can talk about anything from Justin Bieber to the local sports team. textPlus users can search within the app to find these communities and discover new people, places and things. Millions of messages have been exchanged every day in textPlus communities.

“Our friends in Canada – where we have a large, active user base – are very important to us. So when they say ‘our #1 request is to have a free phone number’ we definitely listened,” said Scott Lahman, CEO of GOGII. “With a dedicated phone number, Canadians are now able to text anyone for free in both Canada and the US. And the best part is that friends not using the app can text back at standard message rates, even if they’re across the border in the US.”

textPlus has partnered with Iristel, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) operator licensed by the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), to acquire the real phone numbers that will be provided to Canadian textPlus users. Iristel’s coverage areas in Canada include cities in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

“Iristel is committed to bring the most advanced and affordable communications solutions to Canadians across the country, so we are thrilled to partner with textPlus and help them deliver on the needs of their Canadian customers,” said Samer Bishay, Iristel CEO and founder. “Iristel’s expansive Canadian local coverage makes our partnership a natural, organic fit since our ultimate goal is to reach out to as many Canadians as possible with the most versatile technologies.”

Phone numbers are available today in the latest version of textPlus, which can be downloaded for free in the Canadian iTunes App Store: http://tpca.cpi.textpl.us/s/t
